The ECA Fair is an event with postgraduate students from Royal College of Art, Saint Lucas Beeldende Kunst, Ghent and Sheffield Institute of Arts. I’m in the Ruth Pelzer’s group, together with Kirsty, Charlie, Russell, Fintan, Page, Sam, Phil, Stephanie and Christine. We are doing the Ghent Directives which we will make work based on the 3 rules predetermined by Ghent Students.
The rules are…
We had a few ideas and in the end we decided to use Page’s balloon and helium gas to make a floating piece of work. Initially a 8 feet red helium balloon will be floating right on top and tied down with black small balloon filled with frying oil to act as weight to suspense the work in mid air, but after experimenting a few times, we decided to use a black bucket instead. The colours chosen were based on the Belgium flag’s colours, black ,red and yellow.
We had a hard time finding the right amount of oil to be put in the bucket as the temperature of the space is always changing, we were also warn not to let the balloon flew to the ceiling as it will sound the fire alarm and a fine will be impose on us. In the end we had to attach the balloon with fishing line to keep it in place while it float.
